The term ‘greatness’ is tossed around like a floosy these days…
When I say greatness, I mean a combination of your potential and real greatness in history or modern times.
We can’t JUST talk about our potential because we have no comprehension of just how great we can be.
We think we’re relegated to be who we’ve been.
We think we’re destined to become who our parents are or our friends are.
We don’t think that ‘billions’ or a crazy adventurous life or a life filled with meaning, purpose, and joy is for us…
…so deep down we don’t fully dive in.
And by ‘dive in’ I’m not talking about some grand plunge into a new, great life…
…actually, I’m talking about the opposite.
Greatness is earned through habit.
It’s not a grand act or a daring decision – though those can be a part of it.
Greatness is who you are when no one is looking, when the world is asleep and you’re away working.
When I say we ‘don’t fully dive in’, I mean that we don’t give these little habits the importance they really deserve.
They are EVERYTHING!
These little habits and actions that we brush off daily because it’s hard to comprehend how much of an impact they can have over time are who we are!
They decide if we’re good, great, or mediocre – or utterly useless.
Every year we set out to change our bad habits and adopt good habits with our New Years Resolutions, and every year we fail to stick by them.
…and just like ‘greatness’ is seen as some grand act when it’s really just a collection of small things done well…
…so too is changing from good or mediocre to great.
It’s a SMALL act, not a big one.
The way to change from good to great…
…from unreliable to reliable…
…from undisciplined to disciplined…
Is to start SMALL.
And not just ‘small’, but as small as you can possibly start.
EVERYONE tries to dive ‘all in’…
…to change their bad habits and ‘become great’ in an instant.
…And then they fail.
They try to do 100 push ups a day, for example. But that number becomes daunting during the second week and non-existent in the third.
You become great, you turn your bad habits into good ones, by starting with 1.
Want to read more?
Start with 1 page a day.
Want to workout/get in great shape/make the gym habitual?
Start with 1 workout a week, or even a month!
Start with 1 push-up a day, one sit-up a day.
Whatever habit it is that you want to adopt, start small.
Whatever habit you want to get rid of, do the same.
The trick is understanding reality…
It’s hard to comprehend how ‘1’ will help us over the long term, but the long term doesn’t exist.
There is only now.
The reality is that over the long term 1 will turn into 100, it’s inevitable.
And small, incremental changes over time compound, yielding astronomical gains – just ask Warren Buffett.
The same law that applies to investing applies to your life.
But the truth is, right now is all there is, and that single action is the best thing you can do right now, so do it, and start small.
This simple and easy idea can change your life.
So, rethink your resolutions, recalibrate them.
Start with one.
Start becoming great.
Be Legendary,
Chad Howse
