One of the best meals I’ve ever had at Morimoto in NYC – what’s one of the best meals you’ve ever had, and where was it?
This morning I woke up to honking taxi’s and the sounds of Manhattan. I love waking up in the Big Apple. I’m here for two weeks visiting my girlfriend, getting together with some friends and other guys in the fitness industry, but also just enjoying this amazing city.
You’re never the first one up in this city that never sleeps because everyone’s constantly moving, working, hustling trying to make a buck or to just better themselves. It’s a complete contrast from my everyday life at home on the West Coast with it’s laid back lifestyle. But I love it. I love the hustle, the history of the city and the people that make it such a one-of-a-kind place to be in.
My visit thus far has consisted of some wonderful dining at restaurants like Morimoto and Balthazar where I have had some of the best meals of my life – but no gym. Actually, training hasn’t really crossed my mind until this morning.
One of the biggest obstacles guys face when trying to live a healthy lifestyle is doing so with an ever changing schedule, or location. It’s tough, it definitely makes things a lot harder. I’ve talked about living a balanced life quite a bit in this blog. Living a healthy life has uncountable benefits, however, pure enjoyment has it’s place as well. And I’ve had my fair share of pure enjoyment on this trip so far.
To be balanced there has to be two sides to something. One thing may have more weight than the other, so it’s not always that easy to balance things out – for example living a healthy and active lifestyle vs simply lounging and eating whatever you want. The benefits aren’t even for both, but they each have their place on the scale.
Happiness isn’t as appreciated without pain, success isn’t as enjoyed without first failing or struggling, and discipline isn’t as successful, nor is life as enjoyable without being a little undisciplined every now and then. Enjoying a nice meal can be a good thing as long as it isn’t the majority.

There are, however, a few things that I normally do that make living healthier a whole lot easier.
1. Act fast
As soon as I get to wherever I’m staying, I do two things:
1) Go grocery shopping – If you’re relying completely on dining out, you’re not going to eat healthy, especially in a city like New York that has so many amazing restaurants.
2) Find a gym – I find a gym and sign up for a weeks pass or however long I’m in town for. Having a place to actually workout the first day you’re there is huge. Plus you’ve actually paid for this temporary membership which makes you less likely to not use it.
Get those two things done right away. If you leave things like having healthy foods readily available or not having a place to train, it’ll be a lot easier to slip.
2. Get it done early
Starting a day off with a great workout feels awesome, it also ensures that you actually get it done, which is especially difficult when you’re travelling and things come up in the last minute. Have a routine and get your workout in before you start your day.

A couple questions:
What is, and where was the best meal you’ve ever had?
Do you have any other tips to staying healthy when travelling?
