Some think that muscle must pre-date strength. The reality is that strength must exist to build muscle.

If you're trying in any way to improve physically, be it by building lean muscle mass or burning fat, a foundation of strength will help you get better results.

If you can lift heavier weights for more reps, you're going to be able to build muscle faster. Where most miss the mark - where I missed the mark for far too long - is in thinking that building muscle and getting stronger are two separate goals.

They're so closely linked that one must exist for the other to thrive, and the best way to get stronger and build muscle is to base your training weights and reps off of percentages of your 1 rep max.

Without this strategy, optimal results won't occur, nor will they be measured, nor will you know whether what you're doing is working or you need to change your tactics.

The limitations of weak people aren’t relegated to muscle building, but fat loss as well.

It’s no secret that more muscle helps you burn more fat – it increases your insulin sensitivity so you’ll use carbs as fuel rather than storing them as fat, but it also creates a higher, healthier metabolism.

If you’re trying to lose fat and you’re not starting with strength you’re going to forever come up short of your ultimate goal.

In trying to grow and evolve as a man, my hormones took center stage, but when I realized that my testosterone levels were so dependent on my degree of muscle mass, my activity, and my conditioning, I was hell-bent on finding the best, most efficient way to train.

First, what isn't the best way to train?

When the process isn't mathematical, when the strategy isn't based on numbers, the results end up looking something like this:

You see growth initially because you're pushing your body beyond what it's currently used to, but as you continue to simply push, you end up plateauing and eventually regressing. Progression needs proper programming to create something more along these lines, with ebbs and flows, maximizer months and weeks where you taper back and allow for much needed recovery:
