I like to go on 1-3 day trips in the hills and woods, by foot as only mean of transport. Weight of my equipment is about 30-40kg, and I cover just the basics – sleeping, eating, protection, first aid kit. 30-40kg is incredibly much when you have to carry it for 5, 10, or 15 hours through the cruel terrain and unpleasant weather. When I am packing, goal is to have everything on my back, so when I am passing through messy terrain I can hold survival saber in left hand and keep my right hand free in case of falling and for general coordination. Having busy hands is not an option.

I can not imagine dragging another pair of shoes or books or multiple caps with me.

It isn’t just the blades, but the other tools as well. And yes, there WILL be a time when you need an awl.
