I always try to be kind to ignorant people like you. I think your condescending tone is funny though. Do you have any musical talent? I can tell you from personal experience that any music teacher I’ve ever met can tell the difference between the talented and those who work themselves crazy, but have no talent to play. Yes, if apply yourself hard enough and long enough, all the students without talent can become proficient at playing the notes… but it is just not music. I love music. I play the guitar. It’s not my talent or my strength. My talents are in craftsmanship, teaching and leadership. Everyone is born with talents. Has no one ever explained this to you? To ignore this is to willfully blind yourself to reality. Chad, get over yourself, everyone else has.

Practice all you want. With no talent in that area, you have ZERO chance at even competency, let alone mastery.

“Talented” people are usually just people who have the discipline to focus day in and day out. I’ve heard that the higher ranked generals in the Israeli Army, one of the toughest in the world, are forced to retire after a certain amount of time in order to prevent the armed forces from gaining too much power and taking over. They all then go on to run successful companies after their tenure in the military.

“My mother said to me, ‘If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.’ Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.” -Pablo Picasso

“From one thing, know ten thousand things.” -Miyamoto Musashi

The point is that it isn’t talent but consistent hard work which is the key to a successful endeavor. And once a person figures out how to become a master in one thing, they will understand what it takes to become a master in anything.

Dedicating 30 years to mastering and perfecting 1 exact thing would almost be considered insane, because literally no-one does it.
Today most people are lucky to spend 3 months working on a skill before they assume they have achieved ‘mastery’ or have given up due to frustration (good things don’t com easy as I’m sure you know!).
