Learning a formalized combat style is an extremely humbling experience. I think that showing up day after day and mixing it up with people who really know what they’re doing takes the wind out of many overconfident sails – and being built back up by those same people sets a great example for behavior.

Agreed. When fighting becomes unemotional, a skill, you do it less outside the ring. Every guy should take up boxing or some combat sport, even simply to get rid of that fear.

I fought a lot growing up at school and with my brothers, but nothing dangerous. It seemed like a part of growing up as a man getting in a few fights.

One of the questions they asked me was if I had ever been in a fight, which I haven’t. I was taught fighting solves nothing, so why bother. Perhaps that’s not Alpha of me, but oh well. Thing is, the members of the board were trying to gauge whether I was too passive for law enforcement or not. Cops get into scraps ALL the time. So they had concerns that I was a coward, I figure. That very scene in Fight Club, where Tyler asks the very title of this blog post, popped up in my head during this part of the review.

a. Agreed. Get in a ring and get in a fight. Gloves and mouthguard in the backyard, same thing.

b. There are definitely examples of good reasons to get in a fight. Many of them. Especially when you’re defending someone who needs defending. Today people pull out their phones and film, they don’t step in and aid.

But yea, get in a ring don’t just go out looking for someone to scrap. Thought I made that clear in the article.
