I agree. that comment was written 3 years ago. We should have initiation rites.

“We obviously can’t, and shouldn’t have those anymore” – this confuses me. Why not? Why shouldn’t we come up with rites of passage for our sons? We don’t have to make them smoke peyote or anything stupid. But we can come up with trials and traditions that help our sons answer the question, “When do I become a man?”

For 12 (in my case it was 12) months you are on your own with a drill sergeant, you make your own bed, and if you don’t do it properly you’ll be redoing it all day. You pray that you can catch 5 hours sleep with call at 5am, not strive to stay awake partying until then. You meet people from all walks of life, you undergo grueling physical activity, while taking verbal and physical abuse. And all in honesty, if there are any ethical issues with anyone, normal military service (I didn’t have such luck because the second have of mine was during mobilization and war) involves firing a maximum of 30 rounds.

You fundamentally go through hell, experience the worst 12 months of your life, while I was there I was wondering why my father poured us and our family shots in celebration. When I left I realized, when you walk out….you know you’re a man.

PS

Note I mean NOT in combat, just regular military conscription.

Hey Brian, I agree with you man. In the past, rites of passage were a literal moment when I boy became a man. We obviously can’t, and shouldn’t have those anymore, but – like you said – giving them the knowledge and skills they need over their lifetime IS what we can do. Great comment man, awesome to hear from you.

I think that that test you’ve mentioned is exactly what I was trying to convey with the article. That test is an initiation rite, isn’t it?
