Every now and then I click on it and read it again.

It is timeless! It remains one of your best works, IMO. Each time I take not just a few, but many inspirational messages from it. It was from this article that I took a real locomotive message that I have used many, many times. In fact, I have changed it a bit for a better fit.

At the time I wrote and told you about this. The quote was, “Discipline ruled my life. You may think that life wasn’t as fun, but it was. There was freedom in boundaries I placed on my life. There was liberation in the limitations. Pain was freedom.” You wrote back that you’d had to look up who the author was, and that made you laugh.

Since I know I will never sell it — and probably never even give it — to anyone else, I took the liberty of altering it to this: “Discipline rules my life. There is freedom in boundaries I place on my life. There is liberation in the limitations. Pain is freedom.”

I thanked you then, and I thank you again. I hope all is going well for you.

Sincerely,

Catsie

I am 22 years old and have had a few hardships in my short life. I was going through a moment of depression for a while a few months back, desperately trying to find myself. I have since decided simply not to be depressed any more and follow what I truly love which is serving in the Australian Defence Force with my mind set on applying for SAS or Commando regiments. I have always felt the warrior in me and my peers have let it be know I definitely have warrior traits deeply embedded. However, my own self doubt is always at the forefront of my mind as these soldiers (Warriors) are the best of the best. Your article cleared a lot of that self doubt up. Nothing will stop me from achieving my goals. My persistence will eliminate any resistance.

We are our worst enemy, and indeed, doubt of our capacity and surrender to ease weakens our spirit and our power. Great work, Chad.

Well said. I really like that. Being a warrior isn’t always about fighting in the literal sense, sometimes it’s fighting temptation, or even the urge to fight.

If I may add the Shotokan karate dojo kun:
Seek perfection of character
Be faithful
Endeavor
Respect others
Refrain from violent behavior
Karate do is a martial art for the development of character through training, so that the karateka can surmount any obstacle, tangible or intangible.
Nowadays, I see a lot of people equate willing to start a fight as being a warrior when they clearly misses the point.
They need to cultivate their character for more meaningful matters bigger than themselves.
